R.S. Bud Johnson, Principal – Magnet Geological
A Proven Leader in Real Estate, Agriculture and Energy

Early Foundations

Mr. Johnson’s journey began in 1973 when his parents purchased 473 acres along the Colorado River in West Central Texas. Through hands-on ranching responsibilities—from soil and livestock judging to land stewardship—he gained deep insights into sustainable agriculture and resource management. Over a lifetime, Mr. Johnson’s dedication and vision led to the expansion of these holdings to a 9,000-acre ranch in Colorado’s Front Range, west of Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.

Academic Path and Early Innovations

Initially pursuing an engineering degree, Mr. Johnson shifted to geology to further explore geomorphology, geochemistry, and stratigraphy. His academic coursework encompassed:

  • Geology, Chemistry, and Engineering
  • Agriculture including Plant and Soil Science
  • Economics and Contract Law
  • Farm and Ranch Real Estate Appraisal

After graduation, he served for nearly 15 years as a director for both a local soil and water conservation district and a county underground water conservation district. During this period, Mr. Johnson pioneered an innovative grazing rotation program—inspired by the co-evolution of bison and grasses in the Pleistocene Epoch—that reduced operational ranch costs by approximately 80% and eliminated the need for purchased hay for more than two decades. This significantly enhanced the sustainability of the ranch.

Oil and Gas Milestones

Mr. Johnson’s venture into oil and gas exploration began in 1991. By 1994, he had discovered two new oil fields north of San Angelo, Texas:

  1. First Discovery
    • Continues to produce oil more than 30 years later, underscoring its long-term viability.
  2. Second Field
    • Drilled in 1997, this field demonstrated initial choked-back flow rates of over 100 barrels of water-free oil per day for more than three years from multiple wells at less than 5000 feet vertical. After transition to pump the wells continued to produce over 20 years, highlighting reservoir quality and effective production strategies.

Building on these successes, Mr. Johnson established and managed a comprehensive oil and gas service company, growing it to over 100 employees by 2012. Under his leadership, the company oversaw geological exploration, land leasing, drilling, and completion operations for more than 2,000 wells. During this time, Mr. Johnson also developed an empirical water saturation calculation derived from total gas analysis, advancing well evaluation and reservoir management practices.

Expansion into Hospitality

In 2003, recognizing a growing demand for unique lodging near Big Bend National Park, Mr. Johnson initiated the first short-term rental house in the area, known as TerlinguaHouse.com. This venture combines panoramic desert views, modern amenities, and proximity to the national park, offering visitors an immersive experience in southwestern Texas. TerlinguaHouse.com continues to welcome travelers from around the globe seeking both natural beauty and comfortable accommodations.

Present Initiatives and Forward-Looking Projects

Today, Mr. Johnson leverages his extensive agricultural and geological expertise to serve the real estate, agriculture, and energy sectors through Magnet Geological. Key offerings include:

  1. Intrinsic Land Evaluation
    • An investment tool that applies a discounted net present value assessment by comparing the net native or natural attributes of a property to its market value.
  2. Comprehensive Geochemical Testing
    • Evaluating parent bedrock, soils, and water for mineral exploration, material suitability, risk assessment, and environmental health.
  3. Statistical Rainfall Projection Analyses
    • Forward-looking models using historical and current data to inform land use, resource management, and sustainable development strategies.
  4. Digital Twin Architecture for Ranching
    • Mr. Johnson has designed a digital twin system for the ranching industry that integrates AI-driven and conventional solutions to reduce costs, increase revenues, and promote long-term sustainability.

By blending proven methodologies with innovative research and data-driven insights, Mr. Johnson continues to help clients—across all generations—achieve sustainable, profitable outcomes in land and resource management. His ventures from sustainable ranching developments to petroleum discoveries and TerlinguaHouse.com to the present work of Intrinsic Land Evaluations and geochemical innovations at Magnet Geological, exemplify a commitment to forward-looking strategies that embrace both tradition and technology.
